What you need to know

The most important decision you can make to ensure optimum results from any cosmetic procedure is the physician you choose.

How will you choose the person who will perform your surgery? What questions will you ask, and where do you start? The following checklist will help you make an educated, wise decision.

Do:

• Be prepared to interview two or three surgeons.
• Ask your family practice doctor for his opinion on plastic surgeons in your area. If you know any nurses, ask them.
• Read everything you can on the procedure you're considering. Your surgeon's office will have pamphlets for you, but you can also find good information at the library and on the internet.
• Talk to your friends who have had cosmetic surgery. Were there any surprises? Would they recommend their surgeon?
• Be completely honest with your surgeon. He can get the best possible results only if you are open and factual when speaking with him. Tell him what you are hoping to accomplish, and tell him why you've decided to have the procedure.
• Make sure you are comfortable with the staff. They should be professional, friendly and helpful? They should not try to rush you into anything.
• If you are visiting from another state or country, be prepared to be prepare to stay in town up to two weeks, depending on the procedure you are having. Aftercare is extremely important for best results.
• Absolutely, positively make sure your surgeon is Board Certified (by the American Board of Plastic Surgery) - do not settle for less.

Do Not:

• Rush into anything. This is elective surgery; take your time and make a good decision.
• Hesitate to ask all of your questions. If you are uncomfortable asking for more information, you are probably in the wrong office.
• Make price your guiding factor. You can always get everything for less. When you are considering plastic surgery, you want the best surgeon, not the best "deal".
